BOLKA  – Ode to Endorphins

The broadcast with Iles, Soini and Turkka will be seen as part of the Full Moon Dance Festival!

Bolka is a performance by choreographer Reetta-Kaisa Iles, dancer Katri Soini, and the musician Eero Turkka that combines human sound and movement. This highly collaborative work is wrapped around the concept of pain. The artists' own aging, the challenges of the body and breathing, spiritual and life upheavals – all these have given their own impetus to this subject. We live in a time where there is no place for pain: we want to be rid of it, have it removed indefinitely from our system. It gets in the way of our efficiency, an obstacle to our happiness.

Thoughts and feelings are nerve impulses inside the brain. Pain too is a series of nerve impulses
that are shaped by our thoughts and feelings. So it is not the pain itself that makes our lives
intolerable, but the suffering caused by our thoughts and feelings about pain. Research suggests that pain can be transmitted just as emotions such as joy or sorrow are, from one
person to another. The power of music to be a producer of pleasure and a pain reliever is based
on chemical reactions in which the natural drugs of the body, endorphins, are released. The
feeling of satisfaction pushes us to move, creates the need for dance, helping us to forget
the pain while reminding us of what it feels to be alive.

Bolka is a work of pain and tolerance, an ode to endorphins. Dance for the union of mind and
body.
